Fresh Trend: Quixotic Chain Mail & Studs

Isabel Marant S/S 2012 Ready-to-wear collection

Often when we think of Spring we think of color, flowers, and light fabrics; rarely do we think mesh and studs. Well, in this Vanguard world I can forgo the silly flowers and overrated color (let’s save them for one of Monet’s masterpieces). Instead, I have looked to Isabel Marant’s Spring/Summer collection and feel particularly inspired by her reference to the detailing and materials of medieval armor. Because this style can easily turn into a costume or look too heavy for Spring, the focus needs to be placed on negative space and form. I know, it sounds like a drawing class. But bear with me. Take the dress above as an example: to avoid looking too close to a costume, Marant has used soft fabric threading instead of metal to suggest the look of chain mail without being too heavy. Secondly, she focuses on contrasting the thick weave with a sparse cut: the top part of the dress cuts inward in an exaggerated way, bare arms and a long leg are celebrated by the curves of the dress. Similarly, if you were to wear an oversized mesh sweater like Elin (see below), pair it with a tight skirt or pant to highlight the rest of your body.

What is particularly fascinating about this trend, however, is that it has now been adopted for the Spring. I have seen leather, studs, metallics and mesh for the Fall and Winter, but never for the warmer months. Well, now, because of the surge of light colored leather pieces as well as linen knit sweaters, this medieval armor inspired fashion can be the perfect trend for the transition into Spring. Don’t forget to check out the round-up below to see the quixotic mix of chain mail and studs!
